Now not many of us are familiar with Dubai’s culture, as a matter of fact, one of the rules is that a woman cannot hug a man unless she is married to him. concert reviewsmariah carey in sydneyReviewed by Sage Godrei
Can 3 costume changes, 10 astounding tracks and letting a jammed packed stadium audience into the heart of a diva be enough to make up for a 10 pm start? Better late than never, I suppose. Mariah Carey broke onto the scene with her self-titled debut album reaching multi-platinum status. This was in the 90's the era where CD and book clubs would deliver packs of easy-listening and R&B CD's such as Mariah's to your letterbox for you to sample and return, ah-hem, or more correctly pay for when they hadn't been returned by the specified date. Hard to see how this could not occur, this lady's success must be her ability to span such a huge stretch of the music market from being sampled in Hip Hop and re-mixed for clubs as well as hitting the mainstream radio waves and have touched the hearts of almost every love-struck teenage girl at one point or another. With husband DJ Nick Cannon getting the crowd seething for the sight of the dazzling songstress - the single keyboardist on stage to mark her arrival and the soulful African harmony of voices set the tone for the rest of the night. Without a doubt this woman's got soul and a vocal range that surpasses almost all other pop-princesses. Among the booming sound-system and electrifying pyrotechnic design there was a chasm or a divide felt with the " at home with Mariah" feel to the concert. This not even the back up dancers that supported her on a few numbers could make up for. It was an erasing of the facade of the life of a star and we got to see her being primped and preened on stage by her makeup crew - exclaiming unwittingly "that no one will ever know what it's like to be her". Also, sit on a couch with a blanket, have a spoon full of Vegemite that she quickly washed down with champagne and be escorted for walks around the stage by one of her chiseled entourage. Mariah Carey wowed the crowd with a huge opening number "Can't Take That Away" and the dancers amped up the power joining her on-stage for "Touch My Body and "My All". She sung fav #1 hit "Emotions" releasing her magical high-note trills. An eclectic selection of songs through her 20 year career were chosen including, "Always Be My Baby" an impromptu acapella of "Love Takes Time" an amazing duet with old friend Tre Lorenz of "I'll Be There". Tre then introduced the all American band and sang "Rock With You" by the Jackson 5's. Mariah certainly opened her heart to the crowd and a well devised audience participation aspect to the show made her feel like everyone's favorite star. Golden Girl Mariah brought people on stage as she shared stories about her past and photos of her youth and childhood. It's hard to imagine that a starlet who seemed destined for to do nothing else but perform, had times in her life when she was vulnerable too and had to think of back-up plans like going to beauty school, which she eventually dropped out from. Without a doubt the star let us into her life as the artist, the woman, the mother and the wife. She spoke about how much her children Morrocan Scott and Monroe love Australia and that her daughter Monroe spoke her first words here in Australia "I good girl". Mariah brought on stage a 6 year old girl called Mariah from Melbourne, because whilst growing up Mariah Carey didn't know many other Mariah's at all and found this unusual. Her final songs were crystalline, the illustrious "Hero" sent a shiver down every one's back and the finale of "We Belong Together" gave her audience no excuse to walk away without taking something with them. With a voice like Mariah's maybe the old adage comes in quite fittingly good things are worth waiting for. Anti-aging treatments, tight costumes and make-up can only go so far as to determine the height of a performer's career - it's their inner-journey and experience and paths carved out in the sands of time that will truly reveal where and when the exodus dissipates even in all it's sparkling glory like a diamond in the dust. TYGA OFFICIAL AFTERPARTY SYDNEY
Reviewed by Vanessa Fahie
It really was “Rack City” at Trademark Hotel on Friday 30th Nov for Tyga’s Live Club Show and Official After party. Despite Tyga’s late appearance to the club – and request to sit down, pop bottles and snap some photos while his impatient and loyal fans waited in a sweaty assemblage – Tyga delivered a strong show to his audience with a short but intimate performance. He greeted the crowd with his black shades and impressive gold chains, and used his regular ice breaker to greet the crowd; asking who was over 21 and who was under. Being more about the entertainment than the music, Tyga kept his tracks to his upbeat party songs soon after easily getting his fans enthusiastic and ready to engage in his short set. He delivered a solid and crowd pleasing performance which involved a lot of cliche flirting with the girls in the front row and shout outs to his fans up the back. Predictably the audience saved their most animated reaction – and serious booty action – for Tyga’s well known “Rack City”, where he invited a number of star struck ladies on stage to shake their booties. Tyga did well to deliver a high energy performance where the crowd knew close to every word. However with an abrupt finish which didn’t include a farewell, fans were left puzzled when Tyga let the stage and the energetic MC covered for his swift exit to VIP. Nevertheless, the crowd morale was sustained throughout the rest of the night with a true “after party vibe” after his performance, and we look forward to seeing Tyga back in Australia for what will hopefully be a longer and more versatile show. |

This album has a little controversy behind it, as it leaked onto the internet before it actually was due to be released. So if you are finding it hard to stream that could be the reason why. Musically as a genre hip hop offers a lot of freedom in regards to structure and content, it allows for breaks, sequences and samples and this privilege is not compromised at all in this album. It is dance floor ready, kinetic, energizing with a fresh sound. It also has some therapeutic tendencies, flaunting a feel-good streak. Flint has been put to the rock, or should I say, the A$AP Rocky, setting the bar high on this major label debut album release for major works. The title track is wickedly smooth, sounding right day or night. There is the heavy, serious sounding rap with syncopated beats and base lines. A$AP Rocky also proves that he is a man of the world, teaming up with French DJs Birdy Nam Nam and Skrillex for a multi-deck set on the track "Wild for the Night". This is an interesting fusion of electronica, fit for the early hours of the morning. All in all this is a happy go lucky party album, and A$AP playfully skirmishes with the lexicon. Each song has a specific stand out element or direction, and a lot of thought has gone into the production, each drop, break and pause signifies some aspect of the artists message. You'll forget whatever it is you're worrying about after listening to this album. I rate this 4 out of 5 stars. wiz khalifa
